Ali Baba Bunny (1957)
Ali Baba Bunny Review
Ali Baba Bunny is a 1957 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a fantastic entry in the series.
Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny are paired in this classic cartoon that never forgets to make great use of both of these characters with Bugs only suffering a bit in comparison, but he’s still got some lovely moments for himself. The two accidentally end up in an Arabian cave full of treasure (that Albuquerque line has rarely been funnier than it was here), and quickly Daffy gets mesmerized by the treasure and wants to steal it all.
Bugs’ line variation “What’s up, duck?” made me laugh out loud and I loved the fact that the two were foils, but that the bunny genuinely tried to help him in certain situations, but to no avail as the duck’s greed is too extreme. His greed is the highlight of the picture, even going to that very funny miniature Daffy ending. The Arabian setting was beautifully utilized into the gags while the animation is stupendous. My only complaint is that the genie and that bumbling idiot Hassan needed more development.
