Adventure Time Season 9 Review
The ninth season of Adventure Time was pretty much on par with its predecessor with the shorter length serving in its favor.

The first of fourteen episodes is Orb. It’s one of those gorgeously animated and ethereal episodes that are slight in plot, but quite artistic in execution. The season then moved to Elements, which was a miniseries composed of eight installments. Skyhooks is a solid beginning, Bespoken For features a solid backstory for Ice King and this is probably his best episode of the season, and Winter Light has some solid action adventure elements.
Cloudy focuses on Finn and Jake, which was just lovely to witness. Whenever the show centers on their friendship, it is at its best, and here the two had some moving conversations. Slime Central benefits from the presence of Lumpy Space Princess and she was as amusing as ever here, but Happy Warrior is less memorable as it focused on less interesting characters. Hero Heart and Skyhooks II concluded the story very well with LSP being the hero in a way, which was fine with me as I love the character.
Abstract focuses on Jake’s newfound alien appearance and how it affects other people around him. It’s a very interesting exploration of his identity. Ketchup is this very frustrating, childish episode that felt like filler. They experimented here, but it simply did not work with the storybook format coming out of nowhere.

Fionna and Cake and Fionna is yet another episode starring these two that felt annoying and boring to me. I continue to not be a fan of this part of the show’s canon. Whispers and Three Buckets, on the other hand, ended the season on such a great note. The former was quite thrilling and benefitting from a creepy presence of the Lich while the latter was another very suspenseful and memorable episode where Finn was in genuine danger.
Overall, the ninth season of Adventure Time has a solid miniseries at its core with the other episodes ranging from weak to pretty great. It’s a mixed bag of episodes as always, but the animation was stellar and the characterization for the main heroes continued to shine.
Worst Episodes: Ketchup and Fionna and Cake and Fionna.
Best Episodes: Whispers and Three Buckets.
