Adventure Time Season 4 Review

The fourth season of Adventure Time is pretty much on par with its predecessor. Most of the episodes are very good and some are downright superb.

Hot to the Touch focuses on Finn’s relationship with Flame Princess, thus it explored the dangers and passions of romantic relationships. Five Short Graybles is a surprisingly classical anthology episode consisting of five very tiny stories, each constituting a couple of minutes. However, most of them really worked and were ultimately well connected. This experiment was a testament to just how much cool stuff Adventure Time writers pack in each episode.

Web Weirdos is this very mature episode focusing on a spider couple that basically need relationship advice. Finn being their councilor was hilarious. Dream of Love is another very adult and highly sexual episode about Tree Trunks being too transparent and physical with her partner while outside. It’s a very good subject that was well explored here.

Return to the Nightosphere and Daddy’s Little Monster are a terrific two-parter. The latter focused extensively on Marceline and it was great, but the former is the better of the two, and it’s the highlight of the entire season. The panoramic animation was breathtaking to witness and the exploration of this entire world was truly spectacular. A lot happened here and all of it was so much fun to watch in what is the most adventurous episode so far in the series’ run.

In Your Footsteps isn’t memorable at first, but it benefits from a creepy cliffhanger starring the Lich himself. Hug Wolf is by far the most adult episode so far on this show. It’s about this wolf bringing a curse to everybody, which is the curse of hugging people without consent. It’s a very thinly concealed metaphor of rape, which was crazy to witness on a supposed kids’ show. But it worked as they still managed to make it funny while also being a message piece of course.

Princess Monster Wife isn’t the most memorable Ice King episode out there and I did find the lack of Ice King in this season troublesome. Goliad had promise, but it ended up being forgettable. Beyond This Earthly Realm was too outlandish and strange for its own sake. Gotcha! is a Lumpy Space Princess episode, which in and of itself was a brilliant choice as she is the funniest and greatest supporting character on the show. Her many lines here are perfectly delivered and absolutely hilarious.

Princess Cookie basically is a transgender metaphor, which was again very mature to do on this show, but it was still fun enough for children to enjoy. Card Wars is one of the highlights of the season. Yes, it’s smaller in stakes, but I like that as I prefer these one-setting, original concept episodes anyway. Finn and Jake playing a tabletop game was such a great idea and Jake being so competitive was very amusing throughout.

Sons of Mars is very forgettable and uninspired. Burning Low is a solid Princess Bubblegum episode and it was great seeing her get more to do on this show. BMO Noire is a noir parody starring the adorable BMO. It worked and it was very amusing and stylish. King Worm is very imaginative and colorful. It has one bodily function moment that was super adult and unexpected.

Lady & Peebles sees the return of Ricardio, who is one of the actual villains of the show as the Ice King was never really a villain to begin with. It’s a very entertaining, terrific episode. You Made Me is solid, but hardly as memorable as the best episodes of the season. Who Would Win was too silly and uneventful for me personally whereas Ignition Point was one Fire Kingdom episode too many.

The Hard Easy is a fun and solid creature episode. Reign of Gunters is okay, but for starring Gunter and Ice King, I would expect a much better and meatier episode. I Remember You features a phenomenal duet with Marceline and the Ice King. Their relationship was well explored here and Ice King’s mental illness was also touched upon in a moving way. It’s the most emotional episode here. The Lich is a fantastic finale that features an incredible cliffhanger. The Lich continues to be the scariest and most menacing villain on the show.

Overall, the fourth season of Adventure Time is another stellar installment of this very colorful and creative show. While it has its clunkers, it also has a high number of great and/or classic episodes. Ice King was sidelined unfortunately, but Finn and Jake are as great as ever while many supporting characters got their moments to shine here as well. The show continues to mature in style, characters and themes, which makes it terrific entertainment for both kids and adults.

Worst Episodes: Goliad, Beyond This Earthly Realm, Sons of Mars and Who Would Win.

Best Episodes: Dream of Love, Return to the Nightosphere, Hug Wolf, Gotcha!, Card Wars, BMO Noire, I Remember You and The Lich.

My Rating – 4.1
