Bad Moms is a 2016 comedy film directed by Jon Lucas and starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn and Christina Applegate. It is a fun, but clichéd film.

Bad Moms is such a giant cliché of a movie which is a shame as it could have been different and it could have been great having in mind that its premise is quite timely. It is about three overworked mothers who band together to have some fun for once. What I found really problematic is the film’s feminism which is at first admirable, but eventually it went in an undesirable territory as it portrayed motherhood as something that isn’t desirable at all.
That really sends a bad message, but thankfully the movie corrected it near the end when the women learned to be better mothers. The film gives bad moms a good name which is fine, but sometimes it went into that territory too excessively and it should have been presented a bigger social commentary. The premise itself is definitely great, but the execution of it is quite poor.
The acting I found to be pretty solid. Mila Kunis is surprisingly good here and she’s rarely given a better performance than the one in this movie. Kristen Bell is very likable and Christina Applegate is also quote solid. But of course it is Kathryn Hahn who is the standout person here and she is always one of my favorites. But here she surprisingly plays a very different character for her, crude and vulgar, and she absolutely excels in it, stealing every scene in the progress.

Bad Moms is definitely funny at times and some of its humor was very strong and it made me laugh quite a lot, but more often than not, it wasn’t as funny and sometimes its humor crossed the line as it went into overly stupid and disgusting sexual territory. But the actresses made it work and even though the entire third act is just awfully clichéd, the film flew by before that and it is a fun and funny film that is worth a watch regardless of its many flaws.
Bad Moms is very well acted and the standout actress here has to be Kathryn Hahn who excelled in her crude and funny role, the film was quite funny at times and the premise is strong and timely, but the execution of said premise is quite poor with no strong social commentary, the jokes were sometimes too stupid and the entire third act is one giant saccharine and very annoying cliché.
My Rating – 3
