Square Shootin’ Square (1955)
Square Shootin’ Square Review
Square Shootin’ Square is a 1955 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty solid short.
A western bank robber makes a getaway and hides his loot in a tree. Woody Woodpecker pops out of the tree with the bag containing the money. Woody takes off with the robber in close pursuit. This is one of the better western cartoons in the series, but I am still not a fan of this type of story, so I wasn’t thrilled with it personally. It felt familiar, not exciting at all and it lacked in strong gags.
But it looked good due to solid animation and a well utilized setting. I liked how Woody was competent and manic here. That bandit was not all that memorable, but Woody’s scenes stole the show. The ending was a lot of fun and it begged the question why the rest of it wasn’t as good.
