Blood of Zeus Season 2 Review

The second season of Blood of Zeus premiered on Netflix in 2024. It consists of eight episodes. It’s very good, but somewhat inferior to the original.

The first season of this animated fantasy epic premiered all the way back in 2020. This means that we got a four-year gap between the two seasons, which just goes to show how problematic television shows can be nowadays when they don’t have a stricter schedule. I forgot so many important plot developments and characters from the first season, so it was difficult adjusting myself through the first couple of episodes. And it also had a switch in tone and approach that was jarring to get accustomed to.

Whereas the first season was more of an epic adventure, this one is much more so an epic high fantasy with mythological elements in abundance for better and for worse. My main issue with this season is its poor pacing and structure. Whereas the first half of it was a bit slow, the second half was so rushed to the point of being at times incomprehensible. They put so much on their plate in terms of number of characters and plot developments that the result is a very messy season.

With that being said, it still largely worked thanks to strong development of the main characters and a wonderful utilization of Greek Mythology elements. The fantasy scenes were rousing and the questlike nature to the story made it surprisingly archaic, but in the best way possible as these stories should feel ancient. The action is so much fun and quite brutal as the show continues to be violent and graphic, thus it’s only suited for adults. The finale ended on such a great cliffhanger that made me excited for the next season that is sure to be thrilling.

Heron got a bit of a backseat this time around. He still got his moments to shine and whenever he got to showcase his immense powers, the imagery on display was very cool. However, he was sidelined in terms of character development in favor of his brother, Seraphim. He is pretty much the protagonist of this season and I did like his arc quite a bit. He’s a complex, believable character and his conflicts are so well established.

I did not agree with the show’s assessment of forgiveness as I do contend that the worst criminals are irredeemable, but the courtroom elements were still very intriguing and whenever the show gets to deconstruct its age-old myths and stories, the result is a sophisticated half-hour of television. The underworld scenes were very intriguing and I loved what they did with Hades. By portraying him as more of a romantic and a planner, he became this entirely new rendition of the famous figure who was before this mostly just a straight-up villain.

All of the backstories to the characters worked and I really appreciated the show for imbuing the story with so much emotional intensity and purpose. The dialogue is excellent throughout. The score is epic and grandiose while the sound is excellent too. As for the animation, it’s pretty good, but it left a lot to be desired in terms of character animation that lacked in detail.
