Pudgy the Watchman Review

Pudgy the Watchman Review

Pudgy the Watchman is a 1938 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a pretty odd cartoon.

Betty Boop hires a feline professional “Mouse Eradicator” to take over from Pudgy the Pup who makes friends with mice. Betty hires a cat to eradicate her house from the mice after Pudgy fails to do that. Eventually, the cat gets drunk and Pudgy gets rid of the mice nicely while chasing the cat away. This is yet another cartoon in this series where the cat is the ultimate villain and Pudgy is the hero.

The difference here was the inclusion of mice to the narrative. This made the short very odd, especially how the mice took center stage. Pudgy being sidelined along with Betty was a strange choice that did not work, but those scenes were still quite entertaining. The animation and score are substandard, though.

Pudgy the Watchman is a pretty entertaining short in its own right, but it sidelined Pudgy and Betty way too much.

My Rating – 3.4
