The Impractical Joker (1937)
The Impractical Joker Review
The Impractical Joker is a 1937 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a familiar, but very entertaining short.
Betty Boop’s baking is interrupted by her obnoxious practical joking cousin Irving. Grampy comes to the rescue to out-joke the joker. Needless to say, the premise behind this movie is just another variation on the Grampy comes to help Betty with his inventions storyline that we’ve seen countless times before.
However, execution matters and here the movie was executed very well, leading to another wonderful Grampy excursion. The joker character was fine, but it is Grampy and his crazy inventions that were the highlights, some even resembling genuine torture chamber devices. The ending of the cartoon is a lot of fun and Betty also got some great lines of dialogue.
The Impractical Joker is an overly familiar, but wonderfully executed Betty Boop cartoon, once again featuring the super inventive Grampy.
