Whoops! I’m a Cowboy (1937)
Whoops! I’m a Cowboy Review
Whoops! I’m a Cowboy is a 1937 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a weak, odd cartoon.
Betty’s short weakling boyfriend Wiffle Piffle proposes to her. Betty turns him down, saying/singing she’s only interested in a “bronco-busting” he-man cowboy. Wiffle sets off for a dude ranch to learn how to become a real cowboy. It doesn’t work out so well. This boyfriend of Betty’s was first introduced here and he wouldn’t last long in the series and for great reasons as he’s not fun.
The entire cartoon felt misplaced as this series has never delved into the western genre. It doesn’t fit and it felt too strange throughout. The jokes are also stale and repetitive. The animation, score and pacing are fine, but the overall humor and storytelling were quite subpar. Betty is also sidelined in this particular installment and the lead himself isn’t a good fit for her.
