Adventure Time Season 8 Review

The eighth season of Adventure Time is pretty much on par with its predecessor. The structure of this season was quite fresh.

Broke His Crown focuses on Ice King, but it’s a more surreal storyline concerned with virtual reality. It is strange, but it mostly worked. Don’t Look is solidly adventurous, but far from memorable. Beyond the Grotto has an original premise well executed. Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension is weird and offbeat, but the character herself remains intriguing.

I Am a Sword ended interestingly, but it was a rushed episode that needed more work in the oven. Bun Bun and Normal Man are entirely disposable. Elemental is actually quite strong. The mythology behind these elements was so unique and interesting that I wished again that this concept got more episodes to really develop into something epic. Five Short Tables is another Fionna and Cake filler whereas The Music Hole has an authentic, sophisticated storyline.

Daddy-Daughter Card Wars is yet another magical card episode and once again as a fan of this game genre I adored it. It’s both fun and funny. Preboot and Reboot are all about Susan, a previously one-off character that by now has become fleshed out and very interesting. Grass Swords and Do No Harm are only serviceable. Wheels is a solid Jake’s family story that was refreshing. High Strangeness is a strange, but cool and interesting Tree Trunks episode. Horse Ball and Jelly Beans Have Power are both only okay.

Now we come to Islands, an eight-part miniseries within this season that worked as a full-on story arc in its own right. This is the highlight of this season and the only part of it that significantly elevated what otherwise would have been a mediocre season of television. It’s about bioengineering and all these cool SF concepts while functioning as this highly entertaining and adventurous post-apocalyptic sci-fi story with great world building and excellent character development for Susan. Finally leaving the land of Ooo spelled more adventure and more mythology for this series.

Overall, Adventure Time Season 8 ended with a great storyline in the form of a miniseries. This structure was different and unique and more seasons of this show should have adopted this approach. The other episodes are mostly only serviceable, but at least the mini-series was something more ambitious, authentic and highly entertaining.

Worst Episodes: Bun Bun, Normal Man and Five Short Tables.

Best Episodes: Daddy-Daughter Card Wars and Islands.

My Rating – 3.7
