Betty Boop’s Bizzy Bee (1932)
Betty Boop’s Bizzy Bee Review
Betty Boop’s Bizzy Bee is a 1932 animated short film from the Betty Boop series. It is a very good, surreal short.
Betty Boop serves everybody wheat cakes and eventually all the animals get sick after overeating on the cakes. This is a perfect example of everything that was great about early 30s animation. It is a simplistic tale that barely even has a script, but the execution is what elevated it to great heights. It’s such a surreal, delightfully imaginative short in its use of the medium of animation to tell a story and to deliver the gags.
And the gags are stellar throughout. Betty giving them a menu, but the menu only contains wheat cakes. That was hilarious. All the food becoming alive and dancing was a lot of fun too. And seeing the animals overeat was very amusing as was the Moon itself becoming alive and going sick after eating too many wheat cakes. Betty is very cute here, but it is the hippo who stole the show with his food obsession. The animation is just gorgeous and the visual gags are dazzling and very unique.
