Top Ten Castlevania Characters

Castlevania is an animated show that benefits from great world building, themes and animation, but probably its biggest strength lies in its character development, which is very stellar throughout. The show has a plethora of superbly realized, complex personalities. These are the ten best ones.

10. The Judge

This season four character creped me out so much. That final revelation was by far the darkest moment in the entire series. It effectively rendered him as one of the most underrated, biggest villains on this very villain-centric series.

9. Lenore

A vampire who eventually falls in love with a human, Lenore’s relationship with Hector is among the most complex on this show. She is different from her sisters and much more likable, leading to her eventual death being quite poetic and tragic.

8. Dracula

I did expect more from this iconic Castlevania villain, but the first two seasons were amazing mostly because of him. He was both formidable and also wonderfully humanized due to his romantic backstory. He may have died halfway through, but his effect on others was felt throughout the remainder of the seasons.

7. Saint Germain

Saint Germain was actually based on a real historical figure that was quite mysterious. This rendition of the character was terrific. He got such a great arc that went from comedic and lightweight to romantic to villainous and eventually reached quite a tragic conclusion.

6. Sypha

Sypha is by far the best human being on this show that is populated with truly horrible people. Although that led to her not having a fluctuating arc, she was still wonderful throughout. I loved her playful dynamic and her romance with Trevor, but she was a very competent fighter as well.

5. Carmilla

Carmilla is by far the best villain on Castlevania. Rising through the ranks swiftly, she has become a genuinely powerful foe toward the end. Her final fight with Isaac was incredible. She did suffer from a lot of didactic speeches thrown her way, but still this was the only truly competent villain on the series who actually planned her every move carefully, which made her truly formidable.

4. Hector

I did find Hector frustrating at first. This is a man who was used so horribly by the vampires as this puppet and eventually a full-on slave. But eventually, he did rebel and his entire arc along with Isaac’s that promotes a proactive agency in life was quite commendable and important. I loved every single moment between him and Lenore. That was so much fun.

3. Alucard

Alucard is after Sypha the best person of the bunch on this series. A half-human, half-vampire creature, Alucard got a terrific backstory with his father and a fantastic dynamic with Sypha and Trevor that I wanted much more of in the later seasons. He was also just so damn cool in his action scenes and so visually interesting.

2. Isaac

Isaac would have been my number one pick had it not been for his overly quick change in character. But still, that change was fascinating to witness and quite moving. This is a man who was a horrible villain at first, but a very important figure that stands for agency later down the line. A fantastic forgemaster, he was both very smart and oh so cool.

1. Trevor

I have to put Trevor Belmont on the top spot despite his fake death being annoying. This is a guy who is just so much fun due to his drunkenness, grumpiness and a snarky attitude. He has a great dynamic with everybody else on the show while also being extremely powerful. The fact that he is just as cool as the others despite being the only human character with no powers at all was hugely admirable. A swell guy indeed.

Honorable Mentions:

Morana and Striga – This lesbian vampire power duo was quite interesting as they were among the kinder and more reasonable of their kind.

Lisa – Dracula’s only love, Lisa was instantly cool and smart in that important first episode. She was so admirable that it was easy to believe that Dracula would fall so much in love with her.

Varney – This guy proved to be Death himself in a terrific twist that made the final season really stand out. He was badass and quite a memorable villain.
