Best and Worst Films from January 2021
Best Films from January 2021:
3. Jallikattu
This is the time when I get to watch all the big new releases and this year we got a bunch of movies to watch on streaming very soon due to the pandemic. One of these gems is an Indian masterpiece, Jallikattu. The ultimate film about the worst of the humankind, it will make you feel horrible to belong to this species. The movie is also gorgeously shot and very artistic while its hypnotic, manic energy is mesmerizing.
2. Promising Young Woman
The underrated thriller and one of the best movies of the year is Promising Young Woman, a film that will thankfully finally get Carey Mulligan her Oscar. She is phenomenal in the fantastic main role while the movie itself plays out in such an unexpected manner with that ending being sad and happy at the same time miraculously. It’s by far the most purely entertaining movie of the year.
1. The Endless Trench
The Endless Trench is the film of the month for me and the second best movie of the year. This Spanish Civil War movie is all about tension and human emotion. The storyline is so potent and so thematically rich that it’s truly an emotional watch. The romance is also incredible and the main actor did such an amazing job playing such a complex, tortured soul. This is the type of historical drama that has wide appeal and is not a chore to sit through.
Worst Films from January 2021:
3. One Night in Miami
Unlike the best movie of this month, this one is a chore. It’s boring, slow and filled with dialogue that simply wasn’t all that insightful to begin with. The acting is great, but the direction is mediocre and the movie is too stagy.
2. Apples
This Greek drama is the typical Greek movie of recent years, meaning that it’s weird for the sake of being weird and simply not that interesting to watch. While the premise was great, the execution is too problematic as the movie is uninvolving and overly vague.
1. Never Gonna Snow Again
This Polish movie again had an interesting premise, but it ended up being overly focused on weird imagery, strange people and difficult to buy plot developments. I get what they were trying to do here, but the end result was simply too slight, odd and very annoying.
