Hook (1991)

Hook Movie Review
Hook is a 1991 fantasy adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. It’s probably the director’s weakest point in his career.

It follows an adult Peter Pan who has forgotten all about his childhood. In his new life, he is known as Peter Banning, a successful but unimaginative and workaholic lawyer with a wife and two children. However, when Captain Hook kidnaps his children, he returns to Neverland to save them. Along the journey, he reclaims the memories of his past and becomes a better person.
On the surface, this sounds like a solid idea. However, unlike Disney’s ‘Christopher Robin’, this film fails to utilize on its admittedly good idea in any shape or form. What we ended up getting here is a dated, miscalculated mess of a movie that is so cheesy and so damn ridiculous that it really got on my nerves while watching it.
I honestly do not get how so many people these days admit to adoring this movie. I find that horribly biased having in mind it’s all just based on nostalgia. I haven’t seen this film before now, so I do not have my rose-colored glasses on, and I could just see what a bad movie this is.
The characters are also mediocre. Robin Williams gave one of his worst, cheesiest performances and he was horribly miscast in the main role. The same goes for Dustin Hoffman whose Hook is so goofy, but not in a good way. Others are utterly forgettable with some new characters being incredibly annoying such as in the case of Rufio in particular.

The only good think in Hook is some, but only some of the technical aspects. The costumes and some of the sets are quite good, some of the film’s scenes are endearing and the childish humor is definitely perfect for kids. However, for anyone else it’s a failure that isn’t fun due to its ridiculously bloated runtime. The dialogue is also weak and the visual effects are so bad that you could see them throughout.
So many people admitting to love Hook these days just goes to show how biased some can be when viewing a film through rose-colored glasses of childhood. The movie may be good for kids, but not for anyone else as it’s too childish, way too cheesy and horribly misguided in terms of characterization, casting and many utterly ridiculous scenes. It’s quite possibly the nadir of Spielberg’s entire oeuvre.
My Rating – 2
