JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (Stardust Crusaders) Season 2 Review

The second season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is called Stardust Crusaders. It’s another very strong season which is actually more fun and especially funnier than its predecessor.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Stardust Crusaders) Season 2 Review

This season consists of two arcs – Stardust Crusaders and Stardust Crusaders: Battle in Egypt. I preferred the first act personally, but both are really good. Certainly some of its 48 episodes are weak, but most are very good. The storyline is so good as it follows Joseph’s grandson Jotaro who teams up with his granddad and some other friends to go search for newly awakened Dio. His followers with the power of The Stand are after him so basically the entire season acts as a video game with progressive opponents, battles and the eventual arrival of the arch-nemesis.

Let’s talk about the characters who are excellent here. The best character development so far is witnessed in the first arc of this season as the character interactions are wonderfully goofy and they felt like a real family/friends to me.

Jotaro is at first overly cold, but eventually becomes more likable and he’s visually quite cool. Abdul is likable, but dull. Joseph is actually better as an older man than he was as a young man in the previous season. His racism provided excellent comedy and he’s simply a lot of fun. Polnareff can be too goofy, but still he is very funny and the most memorable character of the bunch. Iggy is such an endearing dog and naturally Dio proved to be an excellent villain. His best and most interesting henchman was that crazy old woman.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Stardust Crusaders) Season 2 Review

Stardust Crusaders has that interesting video game structure to it, but that still led to an overly repetitious narrative that definitely did not lead to much innovation. It was a lot of fun, but the genuine excitement, twists and unexpected surprises were thoroughly lacking. But I still found most of the season to be highly entertaining. The animation is once again highly stylized, the score is pretty good and the action sequences are good, but not as great as in the previous season. But the humor is a major improvement as this comedy-heavy season was actually hilarious at times and that’s certainly its biggest strength.

The second season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure lacks surprises and particularly memorable action, but it features stellar characterization and a fantastic emphasis on goofy humor and strong character interactions.

Worst Episodes: The Emperor and Hanged Man Part 1, The Lovers Part 2 and Anubis Part 1.

Best Episodes: Who Will be the Judge!?, Set’s Alessi Part 1 and Dio’s World Part 2.

My Rating – 3.9

You can get this great anime on Amazon.
