The Egg Collector (1940)
The Egg Collector Review
The Egg Collector is a 1940 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a solid, but flawed flick.
This is another Sniffles cartoon and another solid, but not great one. Sniffles is a pretty good Merry Melodies protagonist in my opinion and here he’s again quite endearing. I also liked that owl and of course the worm character is also quite good. The animation is strong as is the slow, but ominous score. I liked that ending quite a bit. It was obvious, but amusing.
The film definitely is sweet and solid, but not up to par with previous Sniffles cartoons mostly because it is just way too slow and overly dramatic in pacing, but lacking the strong atmosphere to pull that approach off. It needed energy in its execution and a shorter runtime. It is one of the more boring entries in the series.
The Egg Collector has solid characterization and ending, but slow pace and an evident lack of energy in its execution.
