5 Coming of Age Movies to Stream on Netflix Right Now
One of the best and worst phases of life is when you’re stuck between childhood and adulthood. When you’re coming of age, every emotion is super intense, every expression so telling, and every thought increasingly profound. It’s the stage where you experience lots of firsts, discover yourself, and start looking at things differently.
Coming of age movies are usually aimed at teens, but I think you can enjoy them at any age. It’s kind of funny to look back at that tender age when you were so full of life and somewhat gullible. The moments when we transition from a child to an adult are etched in our minds – it’s nice to relive them through movies once in a while.
Netflix has tons of good movies on the “coming of age” topic and today I’ll be talking about some universal favorites. I particularly enjoy movie time when the wi-fi is running smoothly and there’s no holdup or buffering. For the ultimate streaming experience, I rely on AT&T Bundles Deals because they work like a charm. I’ve signed up with other internet providers in the past, though I wish I could say the same for them.
Now let’s get to discussing some funny, sappy, dramatic, and overall entertaining coming-of-age movies you can watch on Netflix:
1. To All the Boys (franchise)
Imagine writing private letters to your childhood/adolescent crushes that are only for your eyes. You never intend to send those letters, so you safekeep them in a secret box. However, one day your younger sibling finds out about them and mails them to the people they are concerned. Embarrassing, right? That’s exactly what happens to the protagonist of this story, i.e. Lara Jean.
Lara passes out when Peter Kavinsky (the popular guy at school) approaches her with the secret letter addressed to him – and that is just the beginning of chaos in her life. The sequels of the movie focus on the budding relationship between Lara and Peter, and how they work through the many challenges. The moral of the story is that you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your aspirations in the name of love.
2. The Edge of Seventeen
This movie is about a seventeen-year-old high schooler, Nadine Franklin, who is always on edge. Her mental state is awfully relatable, as that’s how many of us feel during the last of our teen years. We’re trying to fit in, dealing with our insecurities, and taking chances.
Nadine has lost her dad and doesn’t get along with the rest of her family. Her only best friend starts dating her brother, and the guy she has a crush on humiliates her. Towards the end, it gets better when she finds solace in the people who truly care for her.
3. The Kissing Booth (franchise)
When you’re young and emotional, love and friendship may collide. The movie begins with two best friends Elle and Lee, who do everything together. They’ve known each other since birth and appear inseparable, even though their bond is platonic. Lee has an older brother, Noah, who is the cool bad boy at school; it’s no surprise that Elle develops a crush on him.
For a school fundraiser, Elle and Lee come up with the idea of a kissing booth and that’s where sparks fly between Elle and Noah. When the two secretly start dating, the friendship of Elle and Lee is jeopardized. Elle is put in a spot where she has to continuously choose between her best friend and boyfriend, which spurs drama.
4. Do Revenge
When you’re coming of age, it’s natural to become a little self-obsessed. You’re perpetually trying to be perfect, and you can’t take it when things don’t turn out the way you want. The desire for revenge is strong in the teen phase, so that’s what Do Revenge portrays. Many of us are familiar with high school bullying, and some of us don’t even realize that we’ve been the mean girl/boy at some point.
In this film, a former high school diva, Drea, and an exchange student, Eleanor, team up to initiate the downfall of the people who ruined Drea’s high status and reputation. Later, it turns out that Eleanor is not who she says, and Drea has to face the consequences of being ignorant.
5. Senior Year
Picture this: you lose consciousness in high school following an accident during your cheerleading routine. You open your eyes in a hospital, and it seems like everything happened yesterday, but in reality, you’ve woken up from a coma twenty years later. Here’s what happens – you’re a teenager in the body of a thirty-seven-year-old woman.
Senior Year stars Rebel Wilson as the main character whose mind is stuck in her perfect high school life. She is shocked to learn that her boyfriend is married to her nemesis and that her cheerleading accident was not in fact an accident. She returns to high school to get her life back, but the social hierarchy is nothing like it was in her time.
