Yu Yu Hakusho (Three Kings Saga) Season 4 (1994)
Yu Yu Hakusho (Three Kings Saga) Season 4 Review
The fourth season of Yu Yu Hakusho is the weakest of all owing to some very boring middle episodes and some evident problems these overlong shows face, but it is still pretty good.

The problem here is that it really feels like an overly extended season which is problematic as it only has 18 episodes in it, the smallest amount of any season of this show. But because the show definitely felt to be done in terms of story at the end of the last season, this season definitely felt redundant, especially in its conflict and fights.
I just found its middle episodes to be dull and the fights were mostly either too forgettable or way too short which is again odd as these fights should have been much more epic than the ones from before. And I just wasn’t invested in either of them.

With that said, I still find it to be pretty good in the end owing to its great beginning and absolutely awesome ending. Whereas the middle parts were lacking, the first couple of episodes were admittedly very intriguing and such a great build-up. I loved everything about that new female character, that house and the men that came for Yusuke. That was all very well done.
And what is there to say about the ending other than it is amazing. Wow, the last fight was very good, I loved the fact that Yusuke lost and that the other guy didn’t advance to the finale as well. That was great as it established that the Demon Realm is a very difficult and tough place with way too many formidable warriors and that Yusuke still has a lot to go in terms of the strength and fighting abilities. That was so refreshing to see.
But those two final episodes were so great. The penultimate episode is fascinating and great for character development, but the last episode is just pure fun and pure heart. It was so heartwarming watching the team enjoy themselves at the beach and the emotion here is definitely overly played, but still earned as we’ve come to really know these characters watching this very long show.

Yusuke got such great development and I loved his character and the end to his story. Kuwabara is also solid, if not as great as before. Keiko is interesting and I have to say really well developed as she grew up and isn’t weak as before, but more independent and strong. I loved that. Botan is good and I liked Koenma quite a bit. But I have to say that I really was annoyed by Kurama and Hiei. Not their characters as they have always been really good, but their backstories because they were entirely not needed and those episodes felt like filler to me. Yusuke’s demon father is interesting, but underutilized. Mukuro is also very intriguing, but again did not get much development. That character had a lot of potential, but it just wasn’t there in the execution. Yomi is the only new character here whom I liked quite a bit and Yusuke’s fight with him was the only great fight of the season because he is a formidable opponent and some action moments were very entertaining.
Overall, the fourth and final season of Yu Yu Hakusho sometimes felt like filler, but it is still pretty good with a great beginning and such a heartwarming ending. It succeeds as a moving finale for this series that has been really well crafted and genuinely entertaining and filled with likable characters. This journey was rewarding and I am glad that I took it.
