Worst Films of 2018
2018 was a pretty good cinematic year, but it was also filled with quite a number of truly mediocre movies and even some pretty bad ones. This is going to be a very controversial list as it contains some very well regarded movies and not just the critically panned ones (as I don’t really watch those), but it’s my list so I am sticking with it.
5. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is probably the most disappointing movie on this list as it’s a Disney fairy tale so I expected some magical things from it despite the bad reviews which eventually turned out to be true as it contains none of the studio’s magic nor excitement nor memorable plot points with the characters being particularly bland.
4. Dogman
I really did not like this highly unlikable Italian movie which thankfully wasn’t nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Its pace is slow, the protagonist is not well developed at all and its two very different halves do not mash well together at all to the point of the movie seeming very disparate.
3. The Predator
I do not like Shane Black and I find him to be quite an overrated director overall. But still, I am a fan of this franchise and I thought this one had some potential, but the execution is so bad that the movie ended up being thoroughly mediocre. The humor is infantile and the approach doesn’t work at all, though it is original. And it needed much more of its titular character.
2. The Favourite
The Favourite is beloved almost across the board, but I personally despised it. As expected from a Yorgos Lanthimos movie, it’s terribly directed, aggressively weird to the point of being off-putting and it’s also historically inaccurate beyond any good reason. It was nominated for so many , but I personally found it repulsive, stupid and, even worse, entirely pointless.
1. Bohemian Rhapsody
With horribly developed characters, a caricaturist protagonist, a bland script, inaccurate details and simply an entirely misguided homophobic approach to it, Bohemian Rhapsody isn’t only the worst Best Picture nominee in quite a while, it’s also the very worst movie of the entire year in my opinion. It’s unforgivable how manipulative and simple-minded this movie is and the fact that it got some positive reaction from critics just goes to show how biased some people sadly are.
Honorable Mentions:
Mandy – Mandy is admirably different and authentic, but ultimately to its detriment as it was off-putting, pretentious and ultimately empty thematically and in terms of its substance.
Crazy Rich Asians – The most shamelessly promoted movie just because of the representation angle, this rom com is both entirely typical and also very frustrating in its atrocious characters.
Vice – This is the third, yes THIRD, Best Picture nominee on my list. Adam McKay is a horrendous director and Vice is both unsophisticated and aggressively on-the-nose.
