Woody the Giant Killer (1947)
Woody the Giant Killer Review
Woody the Giant Killer is a 1947 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a very problematic cartoon.
This was basically this series’ adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk and the two admittedly don’t mash well together. In this short, Woody is once again a horrible person and he actually destroyed the life of this poor giant. Yes, you can make the case that the giant has always been a good guy in this story, one who is misunderstood, but here he was just a victim.
The short still is entertaining to watch due to some solid gags and a fine energy to it. The fantastical elements and world building were stellar. The animation was especially polished and colorful. I just wished for a more evenly distributed conflict, one that did not see Woody be a pure psychopath.
