Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days (2019)
Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days Review
Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days is a 2019 Canadian animated short film directed by Regina Pessoa. It’s a pretentious film.
From Regina’s personal and visual memories, this short is a tribute to her uncle Thomas, a humble man with a simple and anonymous life. This is her acknowledgment how one does not have to be somebody to become exceptional in our life. That is a great sentiment for sure. The animation is also fantastic, very artistic and with a beautiful palette to it. The score is also quite moody.
However, the film is thirteen minutes long and it feels longer. The pacing is slow, the narration is very excessive and done in the style that artsy movies are rightfully derided for – slow, depressed delivery of each sentence. The end result is a movie that had something interesting to say, but ultimately it felt overly pretentious, very tedious and even unappealing.
Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days had a solid premise and its animation is terrific, but the narration delivery is way too annoying.
