Trollhunters Season 3 Review
The third season of Trollhunters is a solid conclusion to the series with its fair share of strong storylines and episodes, but an uneven quality per usual.

I found this season lying squarely in the middle. It’s quite inferior to the first season which remains the best and freshest one, but it’s a bit better than its predecessor as it’s much less teen-oriented and more fantastical in nature. Still, there are some pretty unnecessary episodes all set in school or at home which are overly slapstick and cartoony in nature, and simply stalling the main story.
But the main plot is pretty good. I actually really liked the new villain Morgana, and Merlin was also quite memorable. Both are excellent and some the highlights of this season. The same should be said for the overall epic tone to it, and more fantastical elements.
I also loved Jim becoming a troll, that was excellently portrayed and quite emotional even. Easily some of the best scenes of the season are those concerning him as he became so well developed throughout the show’s run. I also liked Claire here and how proactive she was while the emphasis on the kids’ parents also provided some pathos and humor. I wanted even more of them, but what we got was all great.
The animation continues to be terrific, especially for television standards. The same should be said for the action which is solidly executed throughout with some great fights. However, it could become quite excessive at times, especially in that very frenetic two-part finale which is epic, but way too action-oriented for me personally.

Overall, I found this season to be a solid conclusion for the entire show. The series had only three seasons, but it was enough for this particular story, and I found that it solidly ended and is overall quite satisfactory. It’s another uneven season, though, and the entire show would have benefited from more darkness and maturity, but obviously Guillermo del Toro wanted to make something for the smaller audiences, and he did just that and mostly quite successfully. I hope children get introduced this way to his great oeuvre later on in life, and I hope to see him In feature animation someday as he truly has a knack for this medium.
Worst Episodes: Bad Coffee and So I’m Dating a Sorceress.
Best Episodes: Parental Guidance and For the Glory of Merlin.
