Tramway (2021)
Tramway Review
Tramway is a 2021 Polish short film directed by Bartosz Reetz. It is a visually sumptuous, but slight viewing experience.
A tram leaves the depot in the morning. As a geography teacher in mid-thirties takes her daily commute to work, an accidental meeting in the tram awakens long dormant desires. As you would expect from this country’s recent cinematic trends, Tramway was shot in black-and-white, and it’s gorgeous to behold. The cinematography and editing are fantastic and some of the imagery here was downright stunning. It has a great sense of time and place.
However, everything else here suffered as a result of an overemphasis on visuals to tell the story that is very slim to begin with. The female protagonist remains underdeveloped and the relationship that is at the center of the movie was given very little time to blossom properly. I would contend that it would have been even better had it not had any story to speak of given how weak this script is.
Tramway is a visually dazzling, gorgeously shot short movie that is undone by its very weak, uninspired script.
