Top Ten Whitney Houston Songs
Whitney Houston is one of my favorite singers of all time. She had such a sad life which was tragically cut short, but she left behind her a strong legacy with many amazing songs full of vitality or strong emotion. She truly does have the voice of an angel. Here is my ranking of her ten best songs with five honorable mentions.
10. All at Once
Immensely catchy, fun and per usual wonderfully sung, All at Once is by far one of the most underrated numbers on this list and the one that deserves much more attention than it gets as it’s such a sweet song that highly deserves its place in the top ten.
9. Where Do Broken Hearts Go
This is a song that grew on the most as at first I did not care for it, but now I do love it. It’s a song that is so well constructed from slower to a more grander sounding ballad which is very poignant in its lyrics and overall very resonant.
8. When You Believe
This number Whitney actually sang together with Mariah Carey for the underrated and great DreamWorks film ‘The Prince of Egypt’. It’s an awesome duet that’s the highlight of the film thanks to two great voices, a beautiful refrain and an operatic quality to it.
7. I Will Always Love You
I Will Always Love You is one of those songs which I respect more than I love because it simply gets boring the more you hear it. However, it’s such a grand ballad which needs to be appreciated for some of Whitney’s most impressive, truly beautiful vocals.
6. Didn’t We Almost Have It All
This is by far one of the saddest, most melancholic songs on my list as its lyrics revoke deep sadness and regret. It’s nonetheless very memorable and catchy to sing to and downright beautiful in lyrics and in her singing of course.
5. So Emotional
So Emotional is the complete opposite from the above entry. This is one of her most purely entertaining numbers filled with fun lyrics and an immensely catchy chorus which gets me up singing every single time I listen to it.
4. How Will I Know
How Will I Know is one of Whitney Houston’s more innocent, sweeter numbers thanks to the somewhat teenage quality of the lyrics, but it’s still highly energetic, playful and very fun to sing to. She’s just had a lot of these fun songs that are timeless to this day.
3. Greatest Love of All
But now we come to the finest songs of her career and the first one is probably her most serious number – Greatest Love of All. This is simply a highly inspirational, beautifully written song that actually lifts you up, inspires you and of course makes you appreciate her vocals too.
2. One Moment in Time
The finest ballad ever to come from Whitney is One Moment in Time which is simply gorgeously sung and beautifully composed and just great across the board. It’s very tender and it grows to a fully grand quality towards its end. A superb ballad for sure.
1. I Wanna Dance with Somebody
This may come as a surprise, but I do actually put I Wanna Dance with Somebody at the top of the list despite it not being serious. But I just adore this song to pieces as it’s not only her catchiest, but also one of the catchiest songs of all time in my opinion. It just instantly awakes you and puts you on your feet and, unlike many songs out there, it’s the beginning here that makes the most impact thanks to infectious, absolutely amazing music in the opening.
Honorable Mentions:
All the Man That I Need – This is a very beautifully song number which doesn’t have the most inspired lyrics, but the vocals and the chorus alone make it worthy of an honorable mention.
I Have Nothing – This is my first honorable mention and another one of those poignant, very well written songs that aren’t as fun, but are moving for sure.
I’m Every Woman – I’m Every Woman, on the other hand, is immensely catchy and a lot of fun, but sounding too different from her other musical output.
Saving All My Love for You – This is another one of those slower numbers which aren’t particularly entertaining, but are well written and beautifully sung.
You Were Loved – This one has very lovely lyrics, but again it’s not particularly energetic plus it isn’t as memorable as the others on this list.
