Top Ten Most Anticipated Films of 2025
2024 was a pretty good year for movies all things considered, though some of those films that I had anticipated to watch the most turned out to be duds. 2025 is a different year in terms of genre fare that is rather slight, but it does have some promising new features from strong directors that I am looking forward to quite a bit. Here are my most anticipated films of 2025.
10. Mickey 17
I am not a big fan of Bong Joon-ho, I have to admit. I find most of his movies to be rather overrated. With that being said, Mickey 17 can prove me wrong as this movie features a pretty good cast and a premise so strong that it could prove to be a fine piece of hard science fiction if done right.
9. Sinners
A film directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, Sinners will hopefully be another solid outing for this capable director. While not a lot is known about this project, we do know that it is this filmmaker’s take on a vampire story and hopefully it will be a pretty good horror in its own right.
8. The Running Man
I am not the biggest fan of Glen Powell, but Edgar Wright can do great things with the right material as was the case with ‘Scott Pilgrim’. I haven’t read this novel, but it’s a Steven King book and it’s a famous story, so this just might be a terrific blockbuster that has the potential to be among the most entertaining films of the year.
7. Zootopia 2
‘Zootopia’ remains one of the best Disney Revival movies, so I am of course excited for its sequel. Disney’s sequels usually tend to be lackluster, but this one may change their course, fingers crossed. We will finally go beyond the world of mammals and meet some reptiles, which sounds promising, but hopefully we get some strong themes as well.
6. The Conjuring: Last Rites
This will be the fourth and final Conjuring movie and I am quite excited about it given that I loved the original and I also really appreciated both of its sequels, which I found to be underrated. Because this is supposedly the last one, I hope that they really conclude the story in an epic and finalized manner.
5. Predator: Badlands
This Predator movie will be set in the future and it sounds quite promising to me. I am a big fan of this franchise, so of course I am always looking forward to what they do next with the concept. But the biggest reason why this one ranks so high on this list is due to ‘Prey’, which was one of the best blockbusters in recent memory.
4. Elio
Finally, we are getting a Pixar original this year in Elio, a film that features an interesting-sounding premise. This will be a science fiction foray for the studio that only did the genre a couple of times before, so I am very excited to see what they do with this cool idea. They really need an original film to strike gold as I am sick and tired of all of these mediocre sequels.
3. The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie
Yes, we are actually getting a Looney Tunes movie this year and it was already released at Annecy, receiving stupendous reviews. Porky Pig and Daffy Duck star in this Bugs Bunny-less movie that looks and sounds terrific in the trailer that I’ve seen. If it’s frenetic and crazy enough, it will undoubtedly be a success.
2. Superman
I am not the biggest fan of this character, but the reason why James Gunn’s Superman ranks so high here lies in that trailer that we’ve gotten quite recently. That one ranks among the best trailers that I’ve seen in quite a while, instantly making me excited about a film that I wasn’t looking forward to before. The lighter tone, a more traditional story and beautiful music made that trailer a winner. Let’s just hope the movie itself follows through.
1. Wicked: For Good
And the number one movie for me has to be Wicked the second part. I still contend that it could have probably fared better as a single film, but nonetheless ‘Wicked’ was one of my favorite movies of 2024, so I naturally cannot wait to see the sequel. I have some reservations regarding the songs that will supposedly be inferior, but still the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba and her rising power will undeniably make for a hugely entertaining sequel.
Honorable Mentions:
The Fantastic Four – This has the potential to be a return to form for the MCU as the lighter tone and material are a good fit for the studio.
Megan 2 – ‘Megan’ was an unexpected delight back in 2023, so we can just hope that the sequel is just as fun and campy as the original.
Jurassic World: Rebirth – This reboot will star Jonathan Bailey and Scarlet Johansson and hopefully it will be a change in direction and story and not just the cast.
