Top Ten Most Anticipated Films of 2019 List
2019 is going to be a very remake and sequel-heavy year, the heaviest in quite a while. And although I am going to watch all of those big movies, most of them are relegated to my honorable mentions as I am always looking forward to the less popular, more interesting endeavors.
10. Dumbo
This is actually my most anticipated film from 2019 when it comes to Disney and not Aladdin or The Lion King. That’s because Tim Burton is behind the camera here and the trailer actually looked terrific and different from the original film. If they are going to make all these remakes of Disney classics, they’d better make them different which is exactly what this one’s doing.
9. Jumanji 3
I did not like the first movie at all as it felt dated to me, but the second one is a blockbuster gem from 2017 which nobody expected it would be that good. Judging just from the quality of that film and the obvious potential to make more stories in this big world, Jumanji 3 is much anticipated for me even if I haven’t seen any promotional material for it just yet.
8. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
This is obviously going to be a very difficult subject matter to do, but Quentin Tarantino does difficult very well as evidenced by his handling of racism and Nazism. That’s why this movie is going to be at least good, if not great. At least I hope so because all of the director’s recent films have been big successes.
7. The Addams Family
I did not care for the first movie from the nineties, but the second one’s a gem. However, while watching both of those movies, I couldn’t help but wonder if this material is better suited for animation and finally we are going to get that! This animated adaptation looks and sounds very promising and I can’t wait to check it out.
6. Joker
DCEU is finally taking some chances and real risks as evidenced by this superhero outing staring Joaquin Phoenix. I am still not sure what to expect from it, but at least it’s an original, new take on the character and I love that this is going to be his whole movie and that it’s not connected to the rest of the DCEU universe, leading to a looser, possibly more unique movie.
5. Missing Link
Laika is awesome and by far the finest stop-motion studio along with Aardman. That’s why every one of their movies I am looking forward to, even if their last effort ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ was a disappointment for me. But this one looks promising as a very charming, highly old-fashioned adventure story.
4. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu
As a Pokémon Go player, I am well aware of this brand and finally it’s getting a big American movie. Yes, Ryan Reynolds’ voice sounds just like Deadpool and it’s distracting, but otherwise the trailer was uncommonly terrific due to good effects, a variety of creatures used and a promising adventure story. It just might be great which nobody could have expected.
3. The New Mutants
Yes, both of the superhero movies on my list are risks and not your regular big studio productions. This one coming from Fox before they got acquired by Disney sounds very intriguing as this horror take on the X-Men franchise. It could be a very different movie than your regular superhero flick owing to its new genre and let’s hope for the best.
2. It: Chapter Two
It was awesome and one of the best films of 2017 for sure. Although the better part of the story was showcased there, I still cannot wait to see the other half of it and it’s going to be very interesting seeing them as adults plus the casting decisions have all been very interesting. I truly hope they stick the landing the second time around as well.
1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
This is not just my most anticipated film of 2019, but it’s also by far the most important movie here because, if it stays a trilogy, it could be one of the best trilogies of all time as the first two movies are downright amazing across the board. The trailers were too cutesy for me, but there must be more to it than what we’re shown and I hope that I get the usual strong emotion, characterization, animation and storytelling that I’m used to by now.
Honorable Mentions:
Captain Marvel – This is the only MCU film on my list and it’s the first honorable mention. It looks to be taking them into a new, fresh direction and I am definitely intrigued.
Aladdin – This is better than The Lion King owing to its trailer and promo material as it looks different and not copied entirely. I just hope it’s as adventurous as the first one.
Star Wars: Episode IX – The Last Jedi I loved in spite of the hatred it gets regularly, but it did end in a way that I did not find myself excited for the next one. But it’s the last one so here we go.
Toy Story 4 – The third entry had such a perfect ending that the existence of the fourth flick in and of itself should be considered a travesty, but it’s Pixar so let’s give them a chance.
Frozen 2 – Frozen is a very singular, finished movie for me so I don’t know what they have yet to tell that hasn’t already been told. But it’s a phenomenon and I am mildly intrigued nonetheless.
