Top Ten Backstreet Boys Songs
Backstreet Boys are one of the best boy bands in history. Although they only reigned during the late nineties and early 2000s, their cult status is deserved as they in this short span cranked out so many memorable, hugely entertaining and to this beautiful ballads and pop tunes. Here are ten best of their songs with three honorable mentions.
10. We’ve Got It Goin’ On
This song takes the tenth spot on the list for being incredibly fun. Yes, it’s slight stuff, but it’s unquestionably hugely catchy, easy to fool around to and it’s admirable for being so different to all the other Backstreet Boys songs that it is recognizable within the second or so.
9. Don’t Want You Back
This is one of the rare Backstreet Boys songs that is actually about breaking up instead of being positive and romantic. It’s so late nineties in its feel, but that’s a good thing as it’s beautifully sung, instantly memorable and very strong in lyrics.
8. As Long As You Love Me
As Long As You Love Me is just adorable. Yes, it’s simple in lyrics and typically overly romantic, but still undeniably easy to get swept by its many charms. The refrain is incredibly catchy and it is honestly one of those Backstreet Boys songs that nobody can dislike.
7. Boys Will Be Boys
Although I don’t put it that high on the list as many others do (it feels too repetitive to me), even I cannot deny its charms as the various ooh-oohs in front of the refrain are unforgettable and the song is iconic in its beat alone, not to mention that it also feels quite unique.
6. Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely
This terrific number somehow always gets sidelined when it comes to this band’s rankings, but it deserves to be among the best of the bunch as it’s not only powerful in tune, but also very beautifully written and quite moving when you think about it. The mood’s the key here.
5. Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)
Quit Playing Games with My Heart is a famous song for the band, but it’s actually one of their first numbers and one of their best among the first albums. This one is particularly interesting for different, more relatable lyrics and such a strong beat throughout.
4. The Call
Among the many ballads and romantic upbeat numbers, The Call is something completely different in the band’s oeuvre. The tempo is incredibly fast and infectious to dance to, the lyrics are strong and the song is amazing both in refrain and in the build up toward it. The first beats alone have the power to instantly hook you in how authentic they are.
3. It’s True
By far the most underappreciated song that the band has ever put out, It’s True is just so damn beautiful. It’s one of those songs you just have to adore – it acts as a powerhouse ballad with amazing vocals, the lyrics are highly romantic and the chorus itself is stunning. It needs so much more attention than it continues to receive.
2. Shape of My Heart
Incredibly underrated, Shape of My Heart is an easy runner-up for this list as it’s one of the catchiest and most beautiful songs by the band. The lyrics are wonderful and the song is instantly memorable with an especially striking refrain, which is something that most Backstreet Boys songs possess.
1. I Want It That Way
This has to be one of the most obvious number one placements in the history of music, but it’s the right one as clearly Backstreet Boys never had as great of a song as this one. This was my personal introduction to the band and in my opinion it remains their only truly amazing number. It is one of the band’s songs as it features a signature slower tempo at first that then leads to an upbeat, unforgettable crescendo. That final chorus is iconic and incredibly catchy. The music spot is also great. It’s one of the best pop singles of the nineties without a doubt.
Honorable Mentions:
I’ll Never Break Your Heart – This one is definitely overly familiar and naïve in its lyrics, but it’s so gorgeously sung and composed that it’s difficult not to like it.
All I Have to Give – This tune is also quite romantic in lyrics. It’s typical, but again even the worse songs from this band are endearing and catchy as is this one.
How Did I Fall in Love with You – To some it may sound cheesy, but this song is very sweetly natured in lyrics and quite memorable, so it gets the last honorable mention from me.
