Heavenly Puss (1949)
Heavenly Puss Review
Heavenly Puss is a 1949 animated short that is the 42nd Tom and Jerry Cartoon. It is one of the most authentic and definitely finest entries in the series.
This entry surprised me how great it is, but most importantly how unique the plot is. Tom goes to heaven, but because he was bad to Jerry his whole life, he must now get Jerry’s signature or he will go to hell. Eventually, he wakes up and it turns out it was all just a dream. I loved that finale as it was so charming and so funny when he kisses Jerry. And the mouse’s reaction is priceless.
But the whole premise is great because it gets us out of the house for once which is interesting and heaven is really well imagined as the animation is great in this one. It is a typical heaven depiction for the decade, but it works as it is detailed in its realization and so much fun. The humor is the only problem here as this isn’t one of the funniest Tom and Jerry cartoons and the score isn’t memorable, but everything else is great with Jerry being very good and Tom is extraordinary and so damn likable this time around. The plot is the reason why this film is one of the series’ best as it is not only authentic, but also wonderfully incorporating both of our characters and is very entertaining and perfectly realized.
