Thru the Mirror (1936)
Thru the Mirror Review
Thru the Mirror is a 1936 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is such a cool entry.
Mickey falls asleep while reading Lewis Carroll’s ‘Through the Looking-Glass’. The cards become alive and the mouse dances with them. And there lies my major problem with this film – it’s basically an old-fashioned musical to a fault. Of all the interesting things they could have done with this premise, they ended up doing the most basic one where he dances with the cards and mostly nothing more or nothing exciting happens.
Mickey is great here and very endearing. The same goes for those cards who are well depicted and very well animated. The animation is terrific throughout with the highlight being the weird imagery and the colorful palette. The score is also pretty good and the film has a mysterious quality to it in certain scenes. I just wish that it had more action and adventure.
Thru the Mirror is definitely very well animated and particularly effective in imagery and premise, but lacking in strong action and adventurous elements.
