The Weakly Reporter (1944)
The Weakly Reporter Review
The Weakly Reporter is a 1944 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a pretty standard flick.
It parodies the hardships and sacrifices from the people on homefront during World War II. I personally find this subject matter not suitable for a parody as this was a terrible period for all mankind, but still they managed to slightly make fun of it while not being insensitive. I just wished the movie was funnier.
Yes, it has its moments with the ham sequence being the cleverest one, but for the most part I was not amused and most of it was either obvious or too safe. The animation is excellent and the narration is actually pretty good, but couple that narration with its parody style and vignettes and you’ve got a movie that felt as if it came from 1934 and not 1944.
The Weakly Reporter is an overly archaic parody short with some fine moments, but mostly lacking in humor and the strength of its vignettes.
