The Unruly Hare (1945)
The Unruly Hare Review
The Unruly Hare is a 1945 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very strong short.
Elmer Fudd is building a railroad and Bugs Bunny is about to disrupt him. Eventually, the road is built and the bunny is on the train, but he jumps out apparently because after World War II the travelling conditions were rather poor. That is a very timely reference which went over my head, but otherwise the film is timeless with a strong emphasis on slapstick and situational humor.
The later parts aren’t quite as good as the first half for me. I loved that scene with the women and the fire. That was very inventive and again goes to show how smart Bugs really is and some of his pranks surely are very intelligent and original. I loved also their chases and the use of the working on railroads song was really well incorporated into the story.
The Unruly Hare has a weaker second half, but the first one is awesome with some very original moments here and there and a very clever Bugs.
