The Underground World (1943)
The Underground World Review
The Underground World is a 1943 animated short film from Famous Studios. It is the sixteenth entry in the Superman series.
Lois and Clark are sent to investigate a cave where a scientist once disappeared. They encounter Hawk Men in there and it is up to Superman to stop them and save Lois. I personally wanted much more from this film because the story and the setting are so intriguing that eventually the action felt underwhelming, especially the third act.
But as I said, the cave is beautifully envisioned and downright beautiful to behold. I also really liked those Hawk Men. They made no sense, but they looked so cool and intimidating, even a bit creepy, and finally the series delved fully into the fantastical elements. The beginning is intriguing and the film is very interesting, but I wish the third act was more fun.
The Underground World has a weaker ending, but the animation is spectacular, the setting is intriguing and the fantastical villains are awesome.
