Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2 Review
The second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is pretty much on par with its predecessor. It’s another wildly entertaining season of sitcom television.

Kimmy Goes Roller Skating! is the first of the season’s thirteen episodes. Lillian starts dating a man here, but the problem with Lillian continues to plague this show. She is such a lovable goof that it’s a shame that she continues to get sidelined, thus most of her storylines are rushed. Kimmy Goes on a Playdate! starts the romance between Titus and Mikey, the construction worker. This relationship is amazing. They couldn’t be more different, thus they are very believable, and their interactions are infectiously cute and goofy.
Kimmy Goes to a Play! is all about gentrification and racism and what not, but most of the themes here were not handled with much sophistication, though I did appreciate the show’s very un-PC approach. Kimmy Kidnaps Gretchen! is only okay in the titular subplot, but the one with the two boys’ date is the better one. They are wonderful together and it’s great seeing a very sweet gay relationship on television, one that is cute without relying on sex and drama.

Kimmy Gives Up! is a very forgettable episode that is only memorable in the Jacqueline storyline as her motherhood here is well portrayed. She has really become a staple for this show and I loved her in this season. Kimmy Drives a Car! is not great, but the relationship between Kimmy and her boss/friend is superbly explored. Kimmy Walks Into a Bar! finally starts dealing with Kimmy’s trauma from the bunker and it’s done in a very respectful manner while the highlight here is of course the gala evening with Jacqueline and her rival Deirdre, so well played by Anna Camp. The two are hilarious together.
Kimmy Goes to a Hotel! is the worst episode of the season as it’s too hokey and odd and unfunny. Kimmy Meets a Drunk Lady! introduces Tina Fey in the role of Andrea, a drunk therapist who befriends Kimmy in this season and the two help each other tremendously. Although she came out of nowhere, I ended up really liking this character as Fey is per usual a lot of fun to watch.
Kimmy Goes to Her Happy Place! has a refreshing, fun coming out storyline while the whole thing with Kimmy was super dark, but also very memorable as that Disney Princess song sequence was unforgettable in its darkness. Kimmy Meets a Celebrity! is quite forgettable in the Titus subplot, but this time around Kimmy’s part is the better one and the television therapist character played by Jeff Goldblum was terrific. This guy just can’t do wrong when it comes to his guest appearances. Kimmy Sees a Sunset! is a solid transitional episode while the finale is excellent as this episode brought Lisa Kudrow as Kimmy’s mom. She was perfectly cast and she stole the show for sure.

Overall, this season had its less interesting episodes and storylines, but those that worked were hugely entertaining and very memorable. It’s interesting to note that here Kimmy got a backseat at times, especially in the first half of the season. Although her trauma was well explored here and the dramatic arc only gets better and better for her, the character is not as funny as she was in the previous season. Others are funnier, especially Titus who is always a lot of fun and Jacqueline whose one-liners steal the show.
