The Summer of Sangaile Movie Review

17 years old Sangaile is fascinated by stunt planes. She meets a girl her age at a summer aeronautical show. Sangaile allows Auste to discover her most intimate secret and in the process finds the only person that truly encourages her to fly. First and foremost, I have to state the obvious – the storyline here is quite simplistic and far from layered. It doesn’t explore any particularly meaningful themes nor is it memorable as a whole.

Individually speaking, in terms of the sequences, it is memorable and quite charming. This is one of those films that act as a series of lovely and sensual events. This movie is full of these small moments that stand out as moving and even quite cinematic. The plane scenes are overlong, but very well shot and those are the movie’s most cinematic parts, especially one stunning scene with the plane flying off in the sky. That scene was otherworldly in quality.

I also liked all of the scenes between the two girls. The character development here is rather weak. We only get that one girl is into fashion and the other is into planes, but the former rarely gets enough development while the latter at least has self-harm and lack of self-confidence issues that get to be resolved here in a touching manner.

The sex scenes are sensual and also quite raw at times. The energy that the two have, especially when together, is admirable. The movie has that young romance sensuality to it that made it a lovely watch. With that being said, the early scenes with the other teenagers were inferior with the tapeworm sequence grossing me out to no end. I hate these animals and that scene was too much for me to handle.

The Summer of Sangaile is gorgeously shot with such a stunningly bright and sunny feel to the color palette. That perfectly accompanied its light and charming tone. The score is also very fun and charming. The acting is fine, if not great. The directing is the same. I just wish the storyline as a whole was better.

Whatever The Summer of Sangaile lacks in terms of storytelling and characterization, it compensates that with its very poetic, sensual and lightweight tone that is perfectly accompanied by a lovely score and gorgeously sunny and bright photography. This is one of those movies that aren’t that strong in the overall storyline, but are memorable as a series of charming and sweet moments peppered throughout.

My Rating – 3.5
