The Stupid Cupid (1944)
The Stupid Cupid Review
The Stupid Cupid is a 1944 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is quite a solid cartoon.
Elmer Fudd is a cupid here and he eventually shoots Daffy Duck with love arrows. The duck falls in love with a hen, but her husband arrives to make him pay. I personally found this cartoon wildly uneven with the second half clearly being much better than the first one as it’s so pleasantly reminiscent to Pepe Le Pew cartoons. The ending itself was rather abrupt and obviously cut, but the scene where he pleads to the rooster was so well crafted.
I also liked the photo of the family moment as well as the physical gags with the hen. The action is so well done here and the humor is solid. However, Elmer himself is disappointing here and rather underutilized with the second half being entirely devoid of him. But Daffy is terrific and a lot of fun.
The Stupid Cupid is uneven with some weaker scenes, but some are excellent and the action and humor are both pretty good here.
