The Sour Puss (1940)
The Sour Puss Review
The Sour Puss is a 1940 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a very fun entry.
Porky Pig goes to the fishing pond with his pet cat so that he can find some fish for dinner. They find a flying fish who torments them in a typical Looney Tunes manner. The film is obviously oddly paced and not particularly original, but still it has its many fine gags such as the very dark suicide gag, all of the flying fish gags and of course that ending. The shark could not possibly be in the pond, but still it was a surprise for me and a very strong finale.
The Sour Puss features Porky and utilizes him quite solidly as finally the pig started getting some much needed spotlight. But his cat is the protagonist here and he’s terrific. The flying fish is not as great as Daffy or Bugs of course, but still he is amusing in that vein. The animation and voice acting are particularly strong here.
The Sour Puss definitely is familiar, but very well executed with solid character moments and some great gags with the ending being the standout one.
