The Simple Things (1953)
The Simple Things Review
The Simple Things is a 1953 Disney short film featuring Mickey Mouse. It is the final film in the regular series.
This is sadly the last Mickey Mouse short produced during Walt’s years and thankfully it’s a strong one. It’s one of those animal shorts and setting entries that focus on one setting and animal and not much else, but at least what it focuses on is great. It’s a seashore cartoon where Mickey is fishing while Pluto has troubles at first with a feisty clam and later with a hungry, aggressive seagull.
The film lacks in terms of the humor, but in terms of action, it is pretty good with the last third being particularly memorable. I liked the scenes with the clam quite a bit, but the seagull steals the show and they are so faithfully portrayed as in real life they are also very aggressive, annoying scavengers. I loved that language of theirs and of course the animation is lovely as is the score and Mickey’s whistling.
The Simple Things is the last regular short in this series and it’s a strong one as it’s charming, wonderfully animated and quite amusing in its final part.
