The Prince and the Pauper (1990)
The Prince and the Pauper Review
The Prince and the Pauper is a 1990 Mickey Mouse featurette. It is a good, but far from great film.
This is an adaptation of the famous eponymous Mark Twain novel and the film sacrifices the themes of the book in favor of more action and humor which was unfortunate. There are some darker moments here and a message, but overall they should have emphasized that message much more. I found the story solid overall, but it should have ended in a better way.
The beginning is the highlight as well as some of the scenes outside the castle with the castle stuff being much less interesting. But we did get Mickey here and in a dual role which was a treat and he’s so great as both the prince and the poor man. Pete is again a good villain here, but most of the action surrounding him wasn’t as strong. Pluto is well used and the same goes for Donald. I liked the score quite a bit and the animation is very polished and modernized for the early nineties. The film is never as good as their previous featurette unfortunately.
The Prince and the Pauper has great characterization, animation and score, but it needed better action and storytelling.
