The Old Grey Hare (1944)
The Old Grey Hare Review
The Old Grey Hare is a 1944 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very weird movie.
It follows old Bugs Bunny and old Elmer Fudd, but they also are babies at some point. I don’t know what was going on here and I found it overly weird and silly. I do admit that it’s rather original in plot, but it could have been better crafted and funnier. It’s wildly original, but also way too crazy.
The animation is stellar and the character designs are pretty strong. I did like some of the gags here and I found the overall energy to the cartoon and its idiosyncrasy interesting. But then again, none of it is truly hilarious and Bugs himself is surprisingly subdued here as he was never quite as funny here as he was before. Nor as crazy.
The Old Grey Hare is original and crazy, but overly weird and not that well crafted as a whole.
