The Mad Doctor (1933)
The Mad Doctor Review
The Mad Doctor is a 1933 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a fantastic entry.
Mickey dreams that Pluto has been kidnapped by an evil mad scientist and he has to go save him in the doctor’s creepy castle. This is another horror short from Mickey Mouse and certainly the best one so far. It does lack in terms of humor as we only get a couple of fine gags and Pluto’s heart gag is particularly effective and authentic, but the film is at its best when it comes to its technical aspects and atmosphere.
The atmosphere is quite creepy for a Disney short and the film’s animation is truly spectacular. The scientist looks great owing to a terrific design and he’s such a great villain. I loved the look of the castle, the shadowy photography and its amazing attention to detail. This castle looks real and creepy which is a testament to evident talent of its animators. Mickey is wonderful here as is Pluto and of course that ending where the two hug is beautiful.
The Mad Doctor is the best Mickey Mouse short film so far with amazing animation, excellent atmosphere and superb storytelling.
