The Little Match Girl (1937)
The Little Match Girl Review
The Little Match Girl is a 1937 animated short film from the Color Rhapsodies series. It is a pretty tragic flick.
Of course this is a famous story from Hans Christian Andersen that is ripe for the animated short form. And definitely this Color Rhapsody is, despite all odds, a very successful film adaptation with a particularly striking, tragic and beautiful ending. That’s easily the highlight of the film along with the beginning.
However, the dream sequence in the middle section took too much screen time in my opinion and I wanted a bit more of the real world sequences. But this is still a tremendously well animated short with gorgeous backgrounds and a great color palette. The character design is also very strong. The score’s great too and it’s frequently quite moving.
The Little Match Girl is a deserved Oscar nominee with a powerful ending, great animation and terrific score.
