The Legend of Mor’du (2012)
The Legend of Mor’du Review
The Legend of Mor’du is a 2012 animated short film. It is a Pixar short that was based on ‘Brave’.
The short gives in-depth background about the film’s villain – an evil, greedy prince, as told by the eccentric witch who transformed him into the monstrous bear that he is in the original film. This short is a further reminder of what ‘Brave’ could have been. I like that movie quite a bit, but we were misled from the trailers that we would get an epic quest film, but what we got was a family drama.
This short functions more as that epic fantasy story that we expected from the trailers. The witch character was just as funny as she was before and there is that line where she praises her beauty that was particularly hilarious. Her narration is wonderful. The movie gives us an origin story for Mor’du that made sense and was suitably tragic and dark. The animation was a mixed bag. I liked that it had both CGI and hand-drawn styles, but it felt rather cheap as most of these Pixar shorts do.
