The Gay Anties (1947)
The Gay Anties Review
The Gay Anties is a 1947 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a middling flick.
This one is a blast from the past as it reminded me of the earlier Merry Melodies from the previous decade while also being familiar to me as maybe I had possibly seen it before as a child. I did like this one to a certain extent as the premise of the ants going after a picnic lunch only has so many possibilities for a fun, funny flick and sure enough, it isn’t particularly inventive or memorable.
What sets it apart is its use of the 1890s as the time period of the story and that was very interesting. I also loved that singing scene which was hilarious. But other than those positives and the charming animation, the rest of the gags aren’t as entertaining and the ants themselves needed more characterization.
The Gay Anties is a solid Merry Melody with good animation and some fine moments, but overall it could have been more fun.
