The Chewin’ Bruin (1940)
The Chewin’ Bruin Review
The Chewin’ Bruin is a 1940 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It’s a flawed entry.
Once again, as is usual up to this point, Porky Pig is sidelined as he only listens to the old man’s story which then takes place for the rest of the cartoon. The old man is amusing, but the story itself isn’t great. Yes, it has its particularly funny moments such as that ‘Goodbye, Mr. Chips’ joke which was hilarious and some other moments as well, but most of it is pretty standard stuff.
It has an over-emphasis on animals and storytelling instead of gags. The story is weak and the animation, although not bad, isn’t some of the best when it comes to Looney Tunes and I do wonder why they continued to make black-and-white films when Merry Melodies are not only in color, but also wonderfully colorful.
The Chewin’ Bruin has its fine, amusing moments, but is mostly a forgettable entry in the Looney Tunes series.
