The Cat Came Back (1936)
The Cat Came Back Review
The Cat Came Back is a 1936 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a harmless, sweet flick.
Yes, The Cat Came Back is pretty unusual for the series for being a pretty childlike endeavor. But I liked that as it is pretty cute and endearing. The cats and mice each get taught by their mothers how to avoid others but eventually one mouse and one cat befriend each other. I liked the ending as it was happy for a moment until a mother cat remembered being punched by the mouse and returned the punch. That was quite funny.
The sewer scene is overlong and although the film is solid and fun, it should have had more humor in it. I also found its animation pretty weak per usual. The colors are spare and muted and the designs are ridiculous as the mice and cats share the same height which is just ludicrous. But the score is pretty good and catchy.
The Cat Came Back is weakly animated, but funny and charmingly endearing and childlike.
