The Bird Who Came to Dinner Review

The Bird Who Came to Dinner is a 1961 animated short film from the Woody Woodpecker series. It is a pretty strong flick.

Dowager steps out to purchase a toy for her son. Woody Woodpecker pictures a luxurious future in a home as she would have to offer, so he quickly steps out and imitates the walking toy. But Woody is in on a surprise as her son is quite devilish with his toys and he tries to torture Woody, but the woodpecker prevails. Reginald reminded me of Sid from ‘Toy Story’ and he was very memorable throughout. The mother was also interesting, but underused.

This is a terrific cartoon that introduces a stellar premise and executes it well, though not greatly. The animation and score are lackluster. The gags aren’t the funniest too. But the dynamic between the two worked and the lunch sequence was consistently amusing. The ending was also solid.

The Bird Who Came to Dinner is easily one of the best Woody Woodpecker shorts from the sixties due to a solid premise well executed and a memorable antagonist.

My Rating – 4
