Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is a 2018 animated superhero comedy film directed by Aaron Horvath. It is based on the titular television series and it’s a solid movie adaptation.

First off, I have never seen the original television show so I went in totally unprepared. I have to say that I do not understand why this franchise gets so much hate from the animation community when I found it rather solid and stupendous even. At least the movie itself. I definitely find some aspects such as the characters not particularly well defined for the movie, but for the most part you can go in on this movie without previously seeing the show which I certainly appreciated.

The characters are certainly not particularly good. They’re okay, but their development is rather weak. Robin is most definitely the highlight and he’s such a likable, fun and relatable dude. Slade is also a fun villain. But although Cyborg has his moments and is quite funny, others, especially the female members of the team, are underused and underutilized.

The plot is actually quite good as it’s rather fitting for today’s superhero movie climate. The team wants their own movie and Robin in particular is quite frustrated that he doesn’t have his own film. That joke where Alfred and Batman’s utility belt get their own flicks before him is easily the comedic highlight of the entire movie.

Yes, the movie works stupendously as a comedy. I have to say that they poked fun at the darkness of DCEU so well through a lot of funny scenes. The story serves well as a parody of sorts and a strong meta-movie in its own right. I really liked the sophisticated nature of some of its jokes.

However, some of the other humor failed miserably, especially the potty humor and all the fart jokes really made me angry. The film is surprisingly mixed in its approach as it wants to appeal to both children and adults, but only in the adult department it succeeds whereas in the kids’ department it failed miserably owing to overly childish, stupid, demeaning humor.

Teen Titans! Go the Movie also doesn’t quite succeed as a superhero flick owing to a lack of stronger and more memorable action. Some of it is fine, but most is rather forgettable. The dialogue can be quite annoying and immature, but some of it is definitely quite mature and smart. The pacing is so-so and the movie can be excessively action-oriented while its overall structure in its three acts is too familiar for the medium. The score is also quite weak and the soundtrack is really weak as it mixes some sort of modern music and rap with the more traditional Disney-style songs, but none of the numbers worked in my opinion as they were bland and uninspired.

It’s a very well animated flick which is surprising as it’s coming from a TV series, but the end results are quite satisfying. Certainly the character designs are unappealing and typical for television, but the background work is solid and the color palette is particularly appealing. It’s not great, but it’s perfectly fine for what it is.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is a perfectly solid superhero comedy flick which is bland in its soundtrack and quite underutilized in its characters, but it’s very good as a parody of sorts with particularly strong meta-humor and many sophisticated jokes about the superhero genre and the current state of the medium. It’s also surprisingly well animated and although sometimes immature, it’s mostly quite sophisticated surprisingly enough and overall more than satisfactory when it comes to TV adaptations.

My Rating – 3.5
