Succession Season 3 Review

The third season of Succession is the best one so far. This is an explosive, wholly entertaining and twisty season that delivered in spades.

Yes, there is some repetition to be had on this show in terms of character dynamics in particular. Everything remains pretty much the same as it has been before and the first half of the season clearly is inferior to the latter half. The final four episodes were truly amazing, but the build-up to get there wasn’t as strong, though still pretty good.

That last episode is extraordinary. In fact, it might be one of the best television episodes of all time. Yes, I would go that far as it’s that incredible. The twist caught me by surprise. I was shocked that Tom switched his allegiance and how Logan screwed his children over was both uncomfortable and gloriously entertaining to watch.

Logan was truly despicable in this season. He was horrible to all of his kids, but especially toward Shiv. His decision to basically sell his company in the end was reasonable, but undeniably a middle finger to all of his children. The scenes where he negotiated things were particularly interesting to follow due to his on-point, brash way of speaking. Brian Cox once again killed it in this role.

I loved what they did with Connor. He was overly sidelined in the previous seasons, but here he got a strong storyline. I find him to be the only truly good person of his family and his final speech that he directs toward his siblings was truthful and it had to be said. Greg is hilarious as usual. There are moments with him that were laugh-out-loud funny, which is important as a counterbalance to all the heavy-hitting drama.

Tom shifting allegiances worked as it was built up properly. How Shiv treated him has been horrible from the very first season and their final fight spoke volumes of how she really sees him. And Shiv did so many stupid things in this season that once again cemented that her business sense doesn’t equal her extreme ambition. Sarah Snook was tremendous once again and the character’s frustrations with her family were so well explored.

Kieran Culkin is another highlight. Such a talented actor, he portrays Roman with a lot of nuance in all of his scenes. His crazy relationship with Gerri is again so amusing to follow, but I did find him to be too horrible in this season, especially toward his brother. He did choose his siblings over his dad at the end, but before that he was absolutely atrocious.

Jeremy Strong deserves every possible award coming his way for playing Kendall. His scene where he breaks in tears was incredible to witness and it honestly almost made me cry how bad I felt for him. I’ve actually came to like him throughout these seasons and he is easily the most likable of the three main siblings now.

Eventually, the three unite against their father, but they cannot do anything as they are written off the contract, so they stay with no possible moves in the future, which is going to make the next season very interesting. This season depicted how terrible the world of corporations and politics is and how these relations are ugly and compromised. It can get unbearably difficult to watch, but it’s an essential look into this world of power and money that hurts everybody involved.

The third season of Succession did have a long build-up in the slower first half, but that all culminated with the amazing last three episodes with the finale being one of the best television episodes that I have ever seen. The acting performances and character development on this show are astonishing as is the dialogue. It’s all perfectly executed and incredibly entertaining in its twists and turns.

Worst Episodes: Secession and Mass in Time of War.

Best Episodes: Chiantishire and All the Bells Say.

My Rating – 4.6
