Spider-Man: Far from Home Movie Review
Spider-Man: Far from Home is a 2019 superhero teen comedy film directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s a middling Marvel effort.

You’ve been to space“

While on a school trip to Europe, Parker is recruited by Fury to face elemental threats from another dimension. He has the help from mysterious Mysterio, but eventually of course he turns out to be a villain with a personal vendetta against Tony Stark in what was one truly lazy, obvious from the stars twist that really annoyed me.
Now is the perfect time to comment upon this character so here we go. I love Jake Gyllenhaal as he’s always been one of my favorite actors working today. So it was so great seeing him in a superhero flick, and I have to say that he really gave a strong performance. The chemistry between him and Holland was also terrific early on.
But unfortunately the character himself doesn’t deserve such a talent. Yes, Mysterio is one of the weakest MCU villains so far, and that truly says a lot, as he’s so damn unintimidating and I simply could never take him seriously. Yes, he was a perfect villain for a teenager to beat, but still he was too easy an obstacle even for Peter. And his whole vendetta and speeches were beyond cartoony and cheesy.

Fury is so well used and quite funny. Well, Talos actually as explained in the post-credits sequence. That scene is excellent as it moves the Avengers to space for the next MCU phase and I’m all up for it. The same goes for the mid-credits sequence which speeds the Spider-Man story by revealing to the whole world his identity.
Happy and Aunt May are a cute couple, and those scenes were both endearing and funny. And I have to say that Ned stole the show for me comedy-wise. He was absolutely hilarious in this movie with his every line and facial expression being so funny. He’s such a great goofy sidekick for this franchise.
Let’s talk about Spidey. This whole movie is a transitional chapter for the MCU as it deals with the loss of Tony Stark and how he wanted Peter to be an Avenger, but he doesn’t deem himself worthy. And the movie actually in my opinion showcased his unworthiness by making him so damn stupid and naive to his detriment. I love how clumsy and awkward he is and he was so relatable to me personally, but still the extreme naivety bothered me.
MJ is so wonderful! This is the type of old-fashioned love interest who really works despite all odds. She’s so likable in this movie and her humor and dark side along with her smart deductions really made her a proactive character in the end.

The fact that she got this early that Peter is Spidey really made their relationship faster moving thankfully so. And it absolutely worked as this romance is, along with the film’s humor, the highlight of the entire picture. They have an awesome, evident chemistry and all of their scenes are so goofy, awkward and ultimately so romantic that I was glad that we finally got a good MCU romance after Pepper and Tony’s. Both Zendaya and Tom Holland killed it in their roles, and both were perfectly cast in the previous movie.
Spider-Man: Far from Home has a terrific humor and it made me laugh many times. Its breezy, comedic tone really worked out well for it and many characters and dialogue were so funny. The VFX are also superb, and some are even very intriguing such as all the illusion sequences. The action is mostly just good with the exception of a couple of truly stellar sequences which are so comic-booky, instantly memorable and thrilling.
I loved seeing Venice and Prague in particular as I’ve been there and I recognized everything. The movie is very European and like a travelogue which was awesome. But as I’ve already stated above, the villain and the whole plot are so low-key that they made the movie very low-stakes in the vein of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’. It’s thus a forgettable movie in the bigger scope of things – the one that is instantly fun, but not lingering in your mind long afterwards. The fact that it received such rave reviews truly is troublesome.

Spider-Man: Far from Home succeeds wildly in two particular areas – the humor and the romance. The humor is so strong, many characters are funny and the dialogue is superb. It succeeds as a fun teen flick. And the MJ/Peter romance is absolutely terrific as finally Marvel gives us a strong romance after Pepper and Tony. They are so great together thanks to two charming performances from both Zendaya and Tom Holland. The VFX and some action scenes are also terrific and so cool as is the film’s great use of Venice in particular. However, no matter how good Jake Gyllenhaal was, Mysterio is simply a villain whom I’ve never taken seriously how goofy, cartoony and cheesy he is. Peter is ridiculously naive at times and the twist was obvious. And the whole movie is very low-key, very low-stakes in its plot and ultimately forgettable in the bigger scope of things. It’s solid, but quite overrated and inferior to ‘Homecoming’.
