South Park: Post Covid Review

South Park: Post Covid is a 2021 animated comedy special that is the first of the fourteen planned movies/specials planned for the franchise. It’s overall surprisingly solid.

South Park: Post Covid Review

Years after the pandemic, the boys are now adults. They reunite to get to the bottom of what happened to Kenny who suddenly died while trying to go back in time to stop Covid from ever happening. First and foremost, the treatment of the pandemic was tiresome here. They did not add anything new to the conversation and their obvious pro-vaccine stance was downright insulting to witness. From independent, free-spirited libertarians, Parker and Stone went full Democrat in recent years and it is disheartening to see.

The scenes with Randy also did not appeal to me. I am sick and tired of this Tegridy Farms bullshit, so their insistence on this storyline continues to baffle me. It was funny for sure how Randy accused Stan of murdering his mother and sister when it was clearly his fault, but still I would finally put this story to rest myself.

But other than those two storylines, I actually really liked the other aspects. For one, the adult versions of each kid were so well acted with just the perfect voices while their personalities remained intact. Stan being just as disheartened as always and even more as an adult was suitable for the character and I liked Kyle as well. Kenny’s death was hilarious and amusingly grotesque.

The highlights in this Post Covid special are easily Jimmy and Cartman. Jimmy being this comedian in the future who only praises minorities instead of making any actual jokes was a perfect statement on the current state of comedies and SJW/cancel culture propaganda. The jokes about the future were also hilariously childish.

But what they did with Cartman was absolutely brilliant. They basically gave him a Jewish wife and three kids and gave him a rabbi position. At first, I was concerned that this was going to be serious, but thankfully my worries were squashed when it was all revealed to be a plan to screw with Kyle’s head. All of the Jew jokes were hysterical and the baby saying “Fuck Kyle” in that signature Cartman voice made my day.

Overall, I liked South Park: Post Covid to a certain degree. Yes, the pandemic stuff was tiresome and this special is clearly just the beginning of a bigger story with no proper conclusion, but at least those elements that work really work. Stan got a solid arc while Jimmy and Cartman were both hilarious. It’s a messy, but undeniably entertaining new hour of one of my favorite shows.

My Rating – 3.5
